About the Club
Our Mission
To provide a clean, user friendly and safe facility that will contribute to the physical fitness, recreational and other community needs for the residents of Trent Hills (Campbellford) and surrounding area.
Our Purpose
The Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club enhances the lives of the Trent Hills Community by providing a facility that is inclusive, safe and user friendly. The inter-generational club also hosts cultural and community events. It plays a vital role in the community by partnering with organizations to host cultural functions such as the Campbellford Fall Fair, Ducks Unlimited dinners, Incredible Edibles events, fundraising events for the Campbellford Hospital, Lions Club, church groups, as well as Blood Donner Clinics. The facility has also served as a vaccination centre for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Health Unit.
Our Organization
Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club (CDCRC) is a registred charity. It is responsible for maintaining the building and its facilities. It also is responsible for rentals, security, health and safety, bar operations and hiring resources.
As a charitable organization, it has been able to receive grants over the years to help support its initiatives by following strict governmental guidelines.
Meyers Sports Club (MSC) is a tax-emempt not-for-profit organization without capital share. It provides the programs to encourage participation in curling, squash and other physical activites by members of the Club.
Organisational Restructuring
In May 2006, the Auditor recommended a plan and structure subsequently approved by Revenue Canada that required clear separation of the activities and roles of our two Boards.
For a complete list of roles and responsibilities, including By-laws for both CDCRC and MSC, members may contact a member of either Boards of Directors. Also see the Executive page for more details.
Our Building
Built in 1980, the curling arena was funded by 50% Wintario, 25% donations/fundraising and a 25% bank loan. It originally consisted of four sheets of ice, a squash court and a racquetball court. The building was then enlarged in 1986 to add another squash court, a fitness room and a curling locker room. As the interest in racquetball diminished, the racquetball court was turned into another fitness area, creating a cardio room and a weight room. This expansion was funded completely by the club.
In 2011 the mortgage was finally paid off and the Club celebrated with a mortgage burning party. Fundraising and volunteer work continue to provide the extra funds that are needed to upgrade the facility and to keep the equipment in good condition.
Parts of the building are named after local business families who had made a large contribution at the time of construction. The building is called the Meyers Sports Complex for Don Meyers and his family of Meyers transport. The Curling warm room is called the Bennett Lounge for Don Bennett and his family of Bennett's Furniture. The Racquet lounge is named for Bruce Sharpe and his family of Sharpe's Food Market.
Volunteers were instrumental in the building of the facility; donating time, materials and money, they helped this dream become a reality. A large plaque at the front entrance of the building acknowledges the contributions by so many community members at the time of construction.
Our History
Originating in 1886, the Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club has a rich and colourful history. It was built on land owned by the Campbellford/Seymour Agricultural Society. An agreement between the two organizations allowed the land to be rented by the Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club for a nominal amount, with renewals available every twenty years.
In return, the Agricultural Society got the use of the building for ten days during the Campbellford Fair each year. At that time, the building would be closed to members. The Agricultural Society agreement also allowed for their use for other special events. It has traditionally been used for the Chicken Barbecue in May and for the Annual General Meeting. The partnership between these two organizations continues to this day to the benefit of both.
