What a Wonderful Day!
The Curling Club was a sea of red on Tuesday, February 14 for the Ladies’ Valentine bonspiel. The warm room was decorated with hearts, the lunch tables were set with white and red and the curlers came dressed in all their valentine splendour. This bonspiel predates the building of the club, with the first winners on the trophy being in 1969. This year there were teams from Warkworth, Brighton, Marmora, Stirling and Quinte clubs as well as a number of Campbellford rinks.
The teams played an 8-end game and a 6-end game accumulating points to determine the winners. The winners of the first draw and overall winners of the bonspiel were a Campbellford rink made up of Nan MacDougall, Beth Lobb, Jennifer Dryburgh and Pat Burnside. The winners of the second draw were also from the hometown club and consisted of Eunice Stapley, Carol Currelly-Burnham, Glenda Tanner and Susan McIntyre.
A super committee of volunteers plans this bonspiel but relies on the men who volunteer to look after the scoring, work in the kitchen, serve the tables, and tend bar. They looked very elegant in their white shirts and Valentines ties as they worked away throughout the day. Thank you, Dave Martz, for heading up the cooking of the food, which resulted in rave reviews amongst the curlers.
There was a penny auction during the day with over 20 items to put tickets in for. These items were donated by local businesses and by the generous ladies of the Campbellford Club. Everyone enjoys trying to win their favourite items and the returns go to the Club for on-going projects.
Thanks to Robert Ferguson who took many wonderful pictures during the event. Be sure to click this link to see the slideshow.
We must not forget our wonderful sponsors for this bonspiel: Precision Wood Products, McLaren’s Pharmacy, Denis Kelsey and Main Street Realty, and Barb Jack-Hobart. Their sponsorship allows for the giving out of cash prizes to six teams and helps the Club make a profit from the event. The true test of a successful bonspiel is hearing from the participants that they will be back next year. That sentiment echoed through the Club as teams took their leave.
