Meet the CDCRC New President - Dave Martz

When the CDCRC was searching for a new President, it was no surprise that Dave Martz took on the challenge! Following the great job done by both Ben McKeown and Gord Reid, who better to promote this great club to the community of Trent Hills and surrounding area than Dave?

Dave and his wife Charlotte moved to the Springbrook area where they started curling in Marmora. They curled there for 4 years before migrating in 2013 to the Campbellford and District Curling and Racquet Club. A big win for our Club!

Dave relates that his first curling game happened at age 8 when he was called to spare, in a pinch, on his grandfather’s team. His grandfather, Clarence Davis was a serious Tankard Finalist who walked with a cane and held it in one hand on the ice while he held his broom in the other. Dave, being totally new to the game kept getting his turns mixed up and received the odd sharp whack with the cane when he tried to shoot out of turn. Funny enough, his arthritic grandfather depended on Dave to help him down into the hack and after his delivery help him back up! Too bad that was before the time of stick curling and good thing that young Dave stuck around!

Dave’s reputation as humorously noted above, is marked by his leadership spearheading several notable volunteer activities. Recent successes include the 2022 Yard Sale (netting over $5,300), the Chiller Bonspiel (a great day of fun and fellowship which netted $2,000), driving many raffles and inspiring winning teams to donate their prize money back to the Club. He has also been a member of the fund-raising team for the recent Golf Tournament which made $2,300! All of this effort was just last year!

Dave is definitely one of our ultimate volunteers, never asking more of others than he is willing to do himself. Whether it is hanging draperies for the summer décor while balancing on a stack of tables, sloping out the melting ice from the rink at the end of the season, replacing a lock, repeatedly returning empties and stocking the bar or cooking an entire turkey dinner for the Friday evening curlers a few years ago. Dave is in there, up to his elbows in the club setting and example and making it work.

If you are new to the club, Dave will meet you in no time and recruit your help as one of the many volunteers who make this club what it is. You will be welcomed with open arms and instantly become part of this great family. That’s just who he is! A huge thank you for all that you do Dave!
